WHAT DOES WALKING DO?

The Walk For Freedom is our collective effort to shine a global spotlight on modern-day slavery. Our goal is to create a domino effect, where we can generate a heightened awareness of human trafficking, and raise funds to ensure the continuity of our work.

DO I HAVE TO KNOW ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING TO PARTICIPATE?

During the Walk For Freedom, we will be passing out flyers containing information about human trafficking. If you don’t know about human trafficking when you get there, it is our goal that you will know more about it and share our passion when you leave! Feel free to also ask us questions on the day.

DO I HAVE TO WALK TO PARTICIPATE?

No, you can still participate in our Walk For Freedom from a distance! You can financially support a walker, track and post about our #WalkForFreedom on social media, tell more people about human trafficking, or even purchase an official Walk For Freedom t-shirt to wear on the day from our online store.

WHAT'S THE HISTORY OF THIS WALK?

Although we have had many of our A-Teams and supporters do their own walks in the past, the first Walk For Freedom officially took place in 2014.

The Walk For Freedom began in Sydney, Australia, and quickly made its way around the world.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Walks took place in over 17 countries

  • There were over 2,000 participants in total

  • 6,000 flyers were distributed

  • Over ONE MILLION people witnessed our event through our social media platforms.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Wear your Walk For Freedom t-shirt and comfortable walking shoes.
Don’t forget to wear ALL BLACK, so we can make a statement!

What should I bring?

Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.
A camera to capture photos to share with your friends and family to spread awareness.

We ask that all participants leave their bikes, skateboards, scooters, roller skates, roller blades and motorized vehicles at home.

WHAT IS THERE'S INCLEMENT WEATHER?

Rain, hail or shine, we are determined to Walk For Freedom. However, in the case of severe weather warnings or cancellations, you can expect an email from your local Walk For Freedom host.

WHY DO WE WALK IN A SINGLE FILE LINE?

We are walking in single file because it represents unity. What we are a part of is much bigger than the part we play.

HOW ARE FUNDS USED?

Money donated to The A21 Campaign provides crucial funds for addressing the issue of human trafficking in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and North America. We are committed to ensuring that the funds we have been entrusted with are used effectively to fight trafficking.

First off, 81-83% of each dollar we receive through donations goes to victim care assistance. These are some of the practical ways in which we assist them:

  • Dental care

  • Doctor's visits

  • Hygiene

  • Schooling

  • Rehabilitation

  • Clothing

  • Whatever else they may need for physical and emotional well being

Our Crisis Care Shelters provide basic essentials such as housing, clothes, toiletries, beds, food, and access to medical care, psychological care, recreational activities, language training, life guidance, legal assistance, and repatriation assistance for victims of human trafficking. The average cost of providing this kind of care for survivors is 120 USD per day, per survivor.

Our Transition Program provides survivors with housing, living expenses, and access to ongoing medical care, as well as access to counseling from social workers and psychologists. We also provide educational scholarships, vocational training, and employment assistance. The approximate cost of supporting one survivor in this way is 3,000 USD per year.

Our legal office provides legal advice, legal services, and court representation to the survivors in our care. When required, we provide witness protection services as well. The cost of court fees to take a trafficker to court in Greece is approximately 2,200 USD. This does not include the cost of witness protection, legal representation, or additional court fees if the trafficker chooses to appeal the decision.

The A21 Project Centers require funds to cover outreaches to the most vulnerable and at-risk communities as well as hygiene and support packs to trafficked victims in Detention Centers. They also fund A21's ability to assist victims through relationships with Law Enforcement Agencies, hospitals, and other organizations, in order to assist in cases of suspected trafficking. These Project Centers also distribute awareness posters, brochures, and deliver our prevention programs that send teams into the most at-risk areas of Eastern Europe to warn and equip young women so they do not become one of the statistics. The average cost of a prevention trip to warn 1,500 students is 1,000 USD.

The A21 Campaign in Australia, USA, Norway and UK utilizes funds to raise awareness and financial support for our work. They also provide administrative and office support for our work in Greece, Ukraine and Bulgaria. The vast majority of our team are volunteers, and so administrative costs are kept to a minimum.

Every person currently trapped in a trafficked situation should have a way out, and every trafficker should be prosecuted. While the financial cost of bringing freedom in Europe may be high, that does not mean we can forget about the women trapped in this part of the world. Their freedom is worth investing in!

With existing resources, The A21 Campaign can only assist a fraction of the people who currently need to find freedom. Our vision is to provide assistance to every single trafficking victim who needs help. It is only by your support that this goal can become a reality.

IS MY GIVING TAX DEDUCTIBLE?

Yes, A21 operates under three legal entities to facilitate donations and we will issue to you a tax-deductible receipt corresponding to the particular entity you donated to.
